What is a Swedish Massage?
Swedish massages are one of the most popular forms of therapeutic massage. The techniques used in Swedish massage usually involve some combination hands-on work, rubbing, stroking and kneading on the same general areas with an oil or lotion to reduce friction and provide hydration.
This type of massage focuses on general relaxation and can also increase the elasticity of the skin by increasing healthy blood flow to help promote cell health. It may take several sessions to get the best results, but it is well worth it.
How does a Swedish Massage work?
During a Swedish massage, the gentle pressure is actually slightly deeper in some places than others. There are five basic strokes and/or styles in a Swedish massage:
- Effleurage (sliding and gliding)
- Petrissage (kneading)
- Tapotement (rhythmic tapping)
- Friction (with fibers or cross-fibers)
- Vibration / Shaking
As you continue with your massage session, this will be explained in greater detail when necessary to address any specific requests or concerns that may arise. This type of massage can help relax tight muscles, reduce stress and pain, improve blood circulation and flexibility as well as mental health.
Which areas can be treated with Swedish Massage?
A Swedish massage targets the whole body. The five-stroke method is used to relieve anywhere from mild to intense muscle pain, and the severity of each stroke reflects the amount of tightness held within the muscle. More specifically, Swedish massage can provide the following benefits:
- Joint stiffness
- Pain reduction
- Low back pain
- Stress management
